Submitted By Dave Winslade on Sunday, March 31, 2019
As some of the younger families might be aware, starting in the 2019-2020 season, Hockey Canada has mandated players 8-years-old and under (Novice and below) will participate in modified-ice games, which includes cross-ice or half-ice. The focus in practices will remain station-based.

As some of the younger families might be aware, starting in the 2019-2020 season, Hockey Canada has mandated players 8-years-old and under (Novice and below) will participate in modified-ice games, which includes cross-ice or half-ice. The focus in practices will remain station-based.  Starting this 2019-2 season 8-year-olds are called Novice, 7-year-olds are called Tyke and 5 and 6-year-olds are called Initiation.  When you register you will be given the option which age group to register for based on birth year.

In 2019-2020, as per the Hockey Canada modified-ice mandate, the 8-year-old players start the season playing half-ice games and end it with full-ice games.

“Station-based practices, small area games, lightweight blue pucks and age-appropriate ice size ensure players are engaged and have the right start in their hockey experience,” said OMHA Executive Director Ian Taylor. “Scaling the game to match the age group allows young players the opportunity for more puck-touches which promotes greater opportunity for skill-development in puck-handling, shooting, skating, coordination and decision-making.”

A PDF is available to download.  This PDF explains the reasons why, how the games are played and how the practices will run.

This ½ ice hockey is not unique to Jordan Lions Minor Hockey.  This is a Province wide-Canada wide mandate by Hockey Canada so every hockey association will be implementing the ½ Program this fall.
